The Life After College is a stage of life that no one can prepare you for. A constant feeling of “Now What?”. Life goes from being about choosing the right vodka, outfit, and party this weekend to choosing the right benefits for the upcoming year. You go from living a life with no expectations or worrying about tomorrow to extreme self consciousness from comparing yourself to the success of others. While in school, you paid no attention to your age but suddenly since you graduated the clock seems to tick a little faster on you. You try this , you try that and seemingly there are no results. Bottom line, the transition period is rough and no 3 credit course can teach you this lesson.
The only word that matters during your period of transition starts with a “D” and sadly its’ not your new $50,000 degree. Your greatest support during this time will be what you invested within, Drive. Endurance can get you through a 4 year university, but the only thing that will propel you through “Corporate America” is Drive, Determination. The question is no longer how many semesters can you withstand, its more so now: What Exactly Do you want? How Are you going to get it? Do You REALLY want it? What sacrifices are you making? Sacrifices such as coming in early; leaving work late. You may have to take an alternative approach to gain more experience to get in the pay bracket you need. You may be underpaid. Are you budgeting what money you do make to be prepared for an increase in salary? Truth be told, it may not happen how you envisioned it.
Truth is, more than likely, your first job will have little to do with your major. But you should at least seek to take something from it. The Life after is about constantly positioning yourself to be in place for your next move by exhausting all resources to do so. Thinking of Grad School? Are you taking advantage of tuition reimbursement programs? Entrepreneur? What skill sets and short cuts could you take from your current job to your own business. Want to own a home? What steps are you taking to build credit? This is the mindset you have to build. You want wealth? what are you doing now to implant it into your life . Every step you take must be a building block upon your own success. Its all on you now but remember you are not in a race . Anxiety is common. Though it may seem currently as if you are going nowhere, every step towards success adds up. Drive and patience are the only components that will bring about results in this period of life.
